The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is currently seeking a highly motivated Intern for Programme and Administrative Support to join its Evaluation Office (EOU) in Nairobi, Kenya. UNEP is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda.
This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to support the evaluation function of a major UN entity. The selected intern will gain experience in data management, communications, and administrative logistics, working directly under the supervision of the Evaluation Officer. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates in Environmental Management, Development Studies, or International Policy who want to understand how UN evaluations drive impact.
Detailed Role & Key Responsibilities
The intern will be an integral part of the team, contributing across four main pillars:
1. Administrative Support
IT & Security: Assist the IT and Security Focal Points with record keeping, equipment management, and gate passes.
Logistics: Manage office space needs and support logistical arrangements for the Evaluation Office.
2. Evaluation Function Support
Report Management: Ensure evaluation reports meet formatting requirements and are correctly filed in SharePoint.
Dissemination: Distribute finalized reports to managers and stakeholders.
Meeting Coordination: Set up interviews for evaluators and book meeting rooms for staff and consultants.
3. Data Management & Reporting
Database Maintenance: Assist in developing databases and automation tools (dashboards, charts).
Data Analysis: Conduct data quality checks and collate data sets for major reports like the Biennial Evaluation Synthesis Report.
Visualization: Translate data results into clear reports and presentations for management.
4. Communications
Public Disclosure: Upload reports to the UNEP repository and other platforms.
Content Creation: Update internal/external websites and create content for social media.
Resource Production: Assist in producing videos, briefs, webinars, and other learning resources.
Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for this UN internship, applicants must meet the following specific requirements:
1. Educational Status
Applicants must be pursuing studies in Environmental Management, Development Studies, or International Policy and meet one of the following:
Enrolled in a Graduate School Programme (Master’s or higher).
Enrolled in the final academic year of a Bachelor’s degree programme.
Have recently graduated with a relevant university degree.
2. Skills & Competencies
Technical: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is mandatory. Confidence in modern software and ICT platforms is required.
Organizational: Excellent attention to detail, methodical follow-up, and tracking skills.
Interpersonal: Ability to work independently and establish effective working relations across cultural barriers.
3. Language Requirements
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship.
Logistics & Important Information
Financial Status: This is an UNPAID internship. The UN does not pay a salary or stipend.
Expenses: All costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses in Nairobi are the responsibility of the intern.
Visa: Interns who are not citizens/residents of Kenya must obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
