The World Trade Organization (WTO) Secretariat is maintaining three distinct internship programmes for post-graduate students and recent graduates. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, these internships are designed to provide practical experience and deeper knowledge of the multilateral trading system.

Selections are highly competitive and based on merit. Successful candidates are placed on a roster valid for one year, from which divisions recruit interns for specific tasks. This is a paid opportunity open to nationals of WTO Member states and Observer governments.


Available Internship Programmes

The WTO offers three specific tracks to increase diversity within the organization:

1. The WTO Internship Programme (General)

  • Open to post-graduate students from all WTO members and observer countries.
  • Stipend: CHF 60 per day.

2. China's LDCs & Accessions Programme

  • Reserved for students from Developing Countries and Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
  • Stipend: CHF 90 per day.
  • Travel expenses are covered under this specific programme.

3. WTO Support Programme for Doctoral Studies

  • Reserved for Ph.D. students from Developing/LDC countries working on their thesis.
  • Travel expenses are covered.

Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?

Applicants must meet strict criteria to be added to the roster:

1. Educational Status

  • Must have completed at least one year of post-graduate studies (e.g., Master's).
  • Relevant disciplines: Economics, Law, Political Science, International Relations.

2. Age Limit

  • Minimum Age: 21 years.
  • Maximum Age: 30 years.

3. Citizenship

  • Must be a national of a WTO Member state or Observer government.

Compensation & Logistics

  • Daily Allowance: Paid interns receive a daily allowance (CHF 60 or CHF 90 depending on the programme). This includes weekends and official holidays.
  • Cost of Living: Geneva is expensive. The allowance is intended as a supplement; interns must ensure they have sufficient financial resources.
  • Travel: For the General programme, travel expenses are NOT paid by the WTO. (Covered only for China's LDC and Doctoral programmes).
  • Insurance: Interns are responsible for their own health and accident insurance.
  • Visa: Interns may be issued a Swiss legitimation card type "H" (work/residence permit).
