The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a motivated intern to join its Disasters and Conflicts Branch in Nairobi, Kenya. This is a full-time, 6-month opportunity starting in early 2026.
This role sits at the intersection of Environmental Policy and Disaster Management. You will support the "Eco-DRR" (Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction) unit, which advocates for using nature—such as mangroves for storm surges or forests for flood control—to protect vulnerable communities. Additionally, you will support the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR), a global alliance of 25+ organizations.
Detailed Role & Key Responsibilities
This internship is unique because it blends technical programmatic work with communications and advocacy. You will be responsible for:
1. PEDRR Secretariat Management (Communications)
You will act as a key operator for the PEDRR network, managing its global digital presence.
Digital Strategy: Manage PEDRR’s social media channels (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) and create engaging content to increase audience reach.
Newsletters: Develop the weekly PEDRR newsletter focusing on Eco-DRR issues and manage the subscriber database.
Web Management: Maintain the PEDRR website, specifically the “Experts page” and “Case studies,” and manage the Virtual Global Support Centre.
Knowledge Management: Update electronic filing systems in MS Teams and maintain the PEDRR network database.
2. Programmatic Support (Eco-DRR)
You will support the technical side of the Disasters and Conflicts Branch.
Research: Conduct background research for concept notes and programme documents.
Data Visualization: Support the unit in data collection and analysis, creating graphs, charts, and reports to enable data-driven decision-making.
Events: Assist in organizing webinars and conference side events, including drafting agendas and taking minutes.
Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?
UNEP is looking for a candidate with a strong academic background and specific technical skills.
1. Educational Background
Status: Must be currently enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. programme, OR in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree, OR have graduated within the last year.
Fields of Study: Environmental Sciences, Disaster Management, Environmental Policy, Climate Change Studies, or Communications/Graphic Design.
2. Skills & Competencies
Social Media: Strong familiarity with online communications and social media management is essential.
Data Skills: Ability to collect, compile, and visualize data (charts/graphs).
Language: Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required.
Tech: Experience with web content management systems and desktop publishing is a strong asset.
Logistics & Financials (Important)
Unpaid Role: Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN.
Costs: All costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses in Nairobi are the responsibility of the intern.
Visa: International candidates must obtain the appropriate visa for Kenya (UNEP will assist with documentation, but the process/cost is on the intern).
