CAPREIT (Canadian Apartment Properties REIT), a premier real estate investment trust providing quality rental housing across Canada, is seeking a Legal Student Intern for the Summer of 2026. This position is based Onsite in Toronto.
This is a prestigious opportunity for law students to work directly with the Senior Legal Counsel. You will gain hands-on experience in corporate, commercial, securities, and real estate transactions within one of Canada's largest residential landlords.
Detailed Role & Key Responsibilities
As a Legal Intern, you will not just be doing research; you will be integrated into the business operations. Key responsibilities include:
1. Transactional & Corporate Support
Real Estate Transactions: Work with the Investment Department to negotiate, manage, and close real estate transactions.
Corporate Secretarial: Assist in preparing board materials and coordinating regulatory filings.
Contract Management: Review and draft commercial agreements (professional services, marketing, technology) and standardize templates.
2. Legal Advisory & Research
Research: Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda.
Communication: Respond to legal requests from internal clients, translating complex legal concepts into easy-to-understand business language.
Drafting: Draft template notices, releases, and standard documents for operations teams.
Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?
CAPREIT is looking for academically strong and practical law students. Requirements include:
1. Educational Status (Crucial)
Must be currently enrolled in the 2nd or 3rd year of Law School (JD or LLB program).
Note: This role is NOT for undergraduate students; it is specifically for law students.
2. Skills & Competencies
Communication: Excellent English verbal and written skills (ability to write concisely is key).
Technical: Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Organization: Strong ability to multi-task and manage conflicting deadlines under pressure.
3. Preferred Assets
The ability to speak French and/or Dutch is considered a strong asset.
