The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) is inviting applications for an Economic Affairs Internship based at the UN Headquarters in New York. This is a prestigious opportunity to work within the Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO), directly contributing to the UN's global sustainable development goals.

While the role is primarily designed to be In-Person at the New York duty station, the UN offers flexibility. Depending on the candidate's situation, the internship can be adjusted to be Fully Remote, Hybrid, or Part-Time.


Duties and Responsibilities

Interns work 35 hours per week (full-time) under the supervision of a staff member. You will support the department in:

  • Research & Analysis: conducting research on economic policies and sustainable development financing.
  • Data Management: Assisting in the compilation and analysis of economic data.
  • Documentation: Drafting and reviewing documents, reports, and policy briefs.
  • Meeting Support: Assisting in the organization of meetings and events related to the department's work.

Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?

The UN Internship Programme has specific academic requirements. You must meet one of the following criteria:

1. Academic Status

  • Graduate Students: Be enrolled in (or have completed) a Master's or PhD programme.
  • Undergraduate Students: Be enrolled in (or have completed) the final academic year of a Bachelor’s degree programme.
  • Field of Study: Your field of study must be closely related to Economic Affairs or Sustainable Development.

2. Experience & Language

  • Experience: No prior professional work experience is required.
  • Language: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory. Knowledge of another UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an asset.
